Cultural Event: Taiwan Ghost Month 中元節
Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 9:16AM This is not yet the featured video as I do not wish to distract you from the main lesson video. :P
The video is a brief introduction on Taiwan Ghost Month/The Chungyuan Festival. Enjoy a little a piece of Taiwanese Cultural event! ;)
The Chungyuan Festival(中元節) falls on July 15th of the lunar calendar. On this day, you get to see an inevitable scene throughout the household, family and business owners set up a table on which covered with offerings to homeless spirits(aka 好兄弟/hao3xiong1di4 - good brothers ) for them to fulfill their stomach.
The first of July lunar month is scheduled to be the day the door of the underworld is open for spirits to come out and the door will be close, in other words, the ghosts will return on 29th of July on the lunar calendar. Throughout this whole month, which is also called "The Ghost Month", it's also widely believed to avoid outdoor activities for the sake of one's own safety and the possible risk of scapegoating for other spirits.
I thought it would be interesting for you all to see what is happening on this island, Taiwan. :)

It might be better to call the month the seventh (7th) month of the Chinese calendar rather than "July".
