Hi Peggy,
So after i subscribed (cause after all i didn't want you to die, :-) i watched most of your videos, and they where really helpful and fun to watch... (and you smile much more than people from the mainland :-)
So anyway i finally got my pronunciation down right - but my Chinese roommate still complains about my not being able read PinYin correctly (even though she says i got the 4 tones right).
So you use PinYin a lot too... so maybe you could explain a bit about how to pronounce PinYin correctly?

@Supenmanu
Here in Taiwan, we actually use zhu yin(注音), there are pinyin for the road/street names and Mandarin textbooks, which are apparently designed for foreigners. I never used pinyin until I began to tutor Mandarin three years ago. But isn't pinyin designed based on English pronounciation?
no - strange enough pinyin is not pronounced the way a westerner would normally pronounce the letters of the Latin alphabet. Not even the way you would pronounce them in Latin or any other western language.
Pinyin was an invention of the Communist Party before they came up with the simplified characters as they originally intended to completely replace the traditional characters with pinyin. But the people didn't like that, so they had to stick with changing it into the simplified characters. So that's how Pinyin actually came about - so i guess that's why it's more based on how people from mainland China would pronounce the Latin characters - rather than being based on how they are actually pronounced in Latin much less in English.
Really, I didn't know that!!!
In fact, I'm learning Pinyin too in order to teach Mandarin. :D
pinyin seems to be very useful for english people to learn how to speak mandarin... although i do have to agree that even some of them are not said as they appear to be, very interesting 'Supenmanu' thanks for enlightening us all.
And thanks for all the hard work Peggy keep it up.

I watched two of your vids on YOUtube today. They are very professional and you annunciate very well. The smile is great as are the subtitles with the Chinese characters. I also like the funny stories you do before the lesson. My wife is Chinese so your vids really help. Keep up the great work!
Cheers!

Hi Peggy
I was lucky to discover your youtube channel, after I subscribed, I set there and watch all your videos (yes I do mean all of them) and rate them too. Everything were perfect, your hand gestures while teaching are very helpful with the tones, don't ever change that, they are very captivating. You are first person to make the language seem very easy to learn.
Learning Chinese is new to me, so I only have one question so far.
How do native teachers teach native Chinese or Taiwanese children how to read Chinese?
I mean what books and methods do they use? How do they do it? It would mean a lot to us to know. thanks for all your hard work.
Sam
